Le Strie
The territory
Valtellina wine district is located in Italy, Lombardy region, north east of Milan, in the middle of the Alps, close to the Swiss border.
It is one of the few places in Italy where Nebbiolo grape variety is grown.
In Valtellina valley you can find beautiful terraced vineyards which dates back to centuries ago: they are very hard to work on but they are capable to give fine Nebbiolo wines with unique features.
The farm
LE STRIE winery is a wery small, family-run farm, dedicated to producing high quality wines in very small numbers: the average production is about 7500 bottles per year.
There are four of us: Luciana, Marisa, Paolo and Stefano and we grow directly our vineyard which is a bit more than one hectar wide.
Most of the grapes comes from our vineyards and we buy only a small amount of them.
We promote and sell directly our wines.
The wines
We have three kind of wines: all of them are red and come from Nebbiolo grapes.
They are: Valtellina Superiore d.o.c.g. “Le Strie”; Sforzato d.o.c.g. “Le Strie”; Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio Nebbiolo i.g.t. “Sassifraga”.
Our wines are traditional ones and they express the unique features of Nebbiolo grapes grown in the terroir Valtellina.
In order to make fine wines, we keep the yelds low: on average, 60 quintals per hectare.
We could be allowed, by law, to reach 80 quintals per hectare.
As for vinification process, we work in a traditional way.
It means that for making Valtellina Superiore d.o.c.g. and Sforzato d.o.c.g. the grapes are crushed, destemmed and fermented in stainless steel vats and then allowed to mature in large oak barrels.
As for The Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio Nebbiolo i.g.t., the grapes are fermented and matured in stainless steel vats.
Matching and serving our wines
To make the most out of our products, it is advisable to match them with food: roasted meat, mature chees, game.
Serving temperature: 16-18°C.
Glasses: big ones, baloon type.
If kept in the right conditions, our wines are capable to last for over 20 years.
